After a long tenure under a respected executive, the board knew it was time for an executive evaluation — not just as a routine check-in, but as a chance to assess leadership alignment and organizational health. They wanted the process to reflect their deeply held values of equity, transparency, and integrity. And with increasing pressure both internally and externally, they needed a process that was thorough, professional, and balanced discretion with candor.
CoSpire designed and delivered a robust 360-degree evaluation process that honored the organization’s mission and complexity. We built a custom evaluation tool grounded in the ACLU’s core values, and gathered confidential input from board members, senior staff, peers, and key partners. We also administered a CDR Leadership Assessment to provide deeper insight into the executive’s leadership style, strengths, and development opportunities — adding a layer of depth beyond perception data alone.
The evaluation surfaced both strengths and strain. As we suspected, communication gaps between the executive and board were impacting trust and decision-making. But the process didn’t just name problems — it created a path forward. We facilitated our signature three-part conversation process, creating space for reflection, transparency, and understanding. The executive’s workplan identified next steps for the executive and the board and clarified what would be needed to strengthen the partnership.
The evaluation became a turning point. It helped the board name dynamics they had struggled to articulate, and gave the executive clear feedback — framed with care, not judgment. The final product included a clear workplan, shared goals, and renewed clarity. The evaluation process helped the organization navigate a high-stakes moment with professionalism, values alignment, and transparency — exactly what the ACLU stands for.
"The process was incredibly professional and deeply aligned with our values. It gave our board — and especially the executive committee — the space to process an important moment in the organization’s life with care, clarity, and fairness. We felt supported at every step."
